Farmer Education

Are you someone who likes to be outside? Do you like to connect with others around food, plants, and nature? Would you like to learn more about urban farming? We want to meet you!

Our internship and apprenticeship programs are valuable opportunities for anyone interested in the growing field of urban agriculture. Our experiential-based learning approach will further your skills in farming, and will also ensure that urban agriculture can proliferate. We host high school and college students, recent graduates, those going through a career change, folx from the neighborhoods around our farms… anyone interested in getting involved!

Internships

Our paid internship program is an introduction to the world of urban farming and local food systems. As an intern you will work 22 hours per week on the farm, and engage in monthly educational opportunities to supplement hands-on learning in the field.

We also take the internship program beyond our own fields with field trips to other local farms, and work with the entire SCF team rotating through our three farms at monthly all crew days. This program will give you experience with other aspects of an urban, educational farm, such as farm stands, CSA pick ups, community events, and school group visits.

Interns are encouraged to apply without prior experience.

Apprenticeships

For those looking for a more in-depth education and training in urban farming, we host one apprentice at each farm, under the guidance and mentorship of our farm managers. This is a great opportunity for individuals with some relevant experience interested in being more involved in sustainable farming and local food production.

The role of the apprentice will be that of a learning farmhand, with training provided; the focus of the apprenticeship will be on the field work that helps meet our production needs. The ideal candidate will have a production-driven mindset, have previous experience that enables this individual to serve as a pace-setter, and understands harvest-related time sensitivities. If you are looking for a more relaxed, introduction-level educational opportunity, please check out our internship program!

Apprenticeships are intended for those who have at least one season of growing experience under their belts (or a year working in a fast-paced job).
